As the total population increases, so too will the proportion of seniors. Those over the age of 75 are the fastest growing segment of the population. Significant increases in the prevalence of chronic diseases means that this patient group will require access to more ongoing, complex care. As the Regional Cardiac Care Centre, a compounding issue for St. Mary's is that heart disease is the leading cause of hospitalization.
These factors alone will have a major impact on demand for hospital services.
Simultaneously, technology advances, changing standards of care and increased pressures on health care funding will require the continuous support of the community to ensure St. Mary’s ability to deliver health care close to home.
