A syringe pump is a small infusion pump used to gradually administer small amounts of fluid (with or without medication) to a patient. Some syringe pumps can both infuse and withdraw solutions.
Syringe drivers are useful for delivering intravenous (IV) therapies over several minutes. They infuse solutions at a constant rate. In the case of a medication which should be slowly pushed in over the course of several minutes, this device saves staff time and reduces medical errors. It is use-ful for patients who cannot take medicines orally (such as those with difficulty swallowing), and for medications too harmful to be taken orally.
Safety is a major factor in ensuring that all syringe pumps are operational. Considerations in syringe pump safety and operation include:
- Dilution rate
- Accurate dose administration
- Stabilization of heart rate and blood pressure
- Standardizes and able to record directly into patient records
St. Mary’s eight operating rooms and cardiac suites all require the use of syringe pumps. Currently, nine syringe pumps are end of life and require replacement. Risks occur when using syringe pumps that are not at optimal health including faulty administration of medication and/or anesthesia and could re-sult in serious harm or even death of the patient.
YOUR INVESTMENT:
Funding is currently sought to replace nine syringe pumps which are end of life. Your support will allow for more accurate medication distribution and increased patient safety.
Total Cost: $59,000 ($6,555 Per Syringe Pump)
