It all started with when a family member playfully swung Jaxon around by his wrist and ankle during a family barbeque. He was sore afterwards and by the time he woke up the next morning, we knew he needed to see a doctor. We checked the new online wait time tool on the St. Mary’s website and headed there, encouraged by the 2 hour wait.
When we arrived, we were quickly seen by a triage nurse who treated our son like he was her top priority. In what felt like no time, we were with another nurse who assured us the doctor would be by shortly and sure enough, he was there just minutes afterward. He quickly and kindly examined Jaxon and, after ordering x-rays, we were on our way to get those done. Although a very painful experience for a three-year-old boy, the technicians did their best to keep him calm and comfortable. They were upbeat, positive and maintained a much-needed sense of humour throughout.
Although he was diagnosed with a dislocated elbow and a hairline fracture, we were in and out of the emergency department in 2 ½ hours. Time flew by and we were never left wondering what was going to happen next. The staff cared for all of us with an incredible sense of respect and professionalism and we left feeling upbeat about an experience that could have been made much worse if not for the efficiency and compassion of everyone at St. Mary’s.
